Floyd Hill Realignment Preliminary Design

CLIENT Colorado Department of Transportation

Location Clear Creek County, CO

This project consisted of preliminary level design for the widening and realignment of I-70 near Floyd Hill in Clear Creek County.

The project includes adding a third lane for westbound I-70 from Floyd Hill to the Veterans Memorial Tunnels, a multimodal trail, and improvements to three interchanges.  The project requires the construction of nine new bridges, a new tunnel, several retaining walls, and several large cuts.

Shannon & Wilson provided geotechnical services for the proposed bridges and retaining walls. Project challenges included completing seven geotechnical explorations through boulder fill along I-70, tall retaining walls near the toe of a large landslide, installation of instrumentation to monitor the landslide, and deep foundations in difficult site conditions that include boulder fill and hard rock.  Shannon & Wilson completed geologic reconnaissance and field explorations, installed and monitored instrumentation, and provided the structural designer with support in the selection of suitable wall and foundation types for the project considering the aforementioned challenges.
