Parks Highway Pavement Evaluation

CLIENT Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities

Location Wasilla to Fairbanks, AK

Shannon & Wilson provided project management for a pavement performance evaluation on 325-mile alignment of Parks Highway between Wasilla and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Project goals included collecting and analyzing data to identify areas that required improvement, and ultimately provide recommendations that allowed for removal of springtime axle load restrictions. The project also supported anticipated construction traffic for the Alaska Gas Pipeline.

Shannon & Wilson assembled a team of geotechnical engineers, pavement engineers, and geophysicists to conduct the project for the State of Alaska Statewide Materials Section. Scope of work included reviewing existing as-built information, interviewing Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities maintenance and pavement professionals, reviewing FWD and pavement smoothness data, and collecting GPR data (to estimate actual pavement thickness) along the project corridor.
