Pike Place Market: Marketfront

CLIENT Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority

Location Seattle, WA

The Marketfront expands Seattle's iconic Pike Place Market by converting an existing surface parking lot into a multi-storied, mixed-use structure featuring a public plaza with sweeping views of Puget Sound.

The new development adds several levels of commercial, housing, parking and open space designed to create connectivity between the Market and the Seattle Waterfront Program redevelopment.

Shannon & Wilson provided geotechnical engineering for this challenging hillside project. The structure was built directly over the existing BNSF tunnel with drilled shaft-supported grade beams spanning the tunnel.  Since the project required a 50-foot deep excavation with temporary shoring and permanent walls to hold up the hill, we performed numerical analyses to evaluate how site excavation, foundation loading, and construction equipment surcharge would impact the tunnel liner.  An extensive monitoring program confirmed performance throughout construction.
