PROJECTS

Tacoma Link Light Rail

CLIENT Sound Transit

Location Tacoma, WA

With more than 2.4 miles of new light rail track and six new stations, the Tacoma Link Extension project will more than double the length of Sound Transit's Tacoma Link.

The expanded line will connect the Theater District, Old City Hall, the Stadium District, Wright Park, and major medical facilities before reaching its Hilltop terminus.

Shannon & Wilson completed final design for the project, which includes an expanded pile-supported maintenance facility, power station foundations, and a 22-foot high retaining wall. We also produced specifications for foundations, earthwork, and instrumentation.

The new rail is atop a 200-foot-high steep slope with a history of landslides.  Preliminary design performed by others recommended mitigation to reduce potential for deep landslides.  By studying the geology and using a coupled seepage-stability analysis, Shannon & Wilson demonstrated that the slope meets stable criteria for deep-seated landslides, eliminating significant mitigation costs.

Service is targeted to begin in 2022.
