Glenwood Canyon Instrumentation

CLIENT Colorado Department of Transportation

Location Glenwood Springs, CO

Over a span of 15 years, rockfall events from a 2,000-foot natural slope in the Glenwood Canyon have caused three road closures.

As part of a statewide, on-call rockfall contract, Shannon & Wilson assisted the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) with a feasibility evaluation for the use of slope radar systems to detect rockfall above the west portal of the Hanging Lake Tunnel on I-70 near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. A slope radar system provided continuous, real-time data for rockfall monitoring.

The project consisted of a two-month demonstration using an IBIS-L system (ground-based interferometric radar) that included a controllable video camera, fuel cells for power, and cellular and wireless communication; three separate readings using a GBIR radar system; and high definition GPS-based LIDAR surveys of the slope.
