O'Brien Creek Hydro Power Project

CLIENT Alaska Energy Authority

Location Chitina, AK

Shannon & Wilson provided geotechnical reconnaissance services for a proposed new remotely-located hydro power project on O'Brien Creek near Chitina, Alaska.

The scope of work involved concept design plans for a new water intake facility, three miles of water pipeline, and a new power house. The concept design was used to develop construction budgets and a feasibility/cost-benefit analysis.

Reconnaissance to the remote Alaskan site was performed via helicopter support over a three-day period. After observing conditions along the project section of O'Brien Creek, the project team provided input on the impact of soil slope stability, rock slope stability, permafrost soils, geomorphology, and the unique soil and rock conditions on design and construction.
