Remembering Phyllis Jean Boucher (1926 - 2025)

It is with a heavy heart that we reflect on the memory and contributions of Shannon & Wilson’s first librarian, Jean Boucher (1926-2025).

Jean joined Shannon & Wilson in 1965 and retired in 1994. During her tenure she played a crucial role in developing our technical library and managing our Records Department. Jean also established the corporate archives, preserving Shannon & Wilson’s history.

Jean introduced new technology to Shannon & Wilson. In 1990, based on Jean’s recommendation, Shannon & Wilson digitized the index of project records, which improved access for staff to past projects allowing staff to leverage their knowledge and experience. Jean supervised the digitization of the library card catalog as well. Under her direction, Shannon & Wilson became an early member of library consortia, enabling the sharing of materials with libraries globally. Jean led Shannon & Wilson’s transition into the digital age in the early 1990s by establishing the first email accounts through a local ISP, Halcyon.

Jean's biggest contribution at Shannon & Wilson was creating patron-oriented research librarianship. Staff trusted her to find answers to their questions. She was among the first non-technical staff to become an Associate. After retiring, she worked as a consultant for ten years, helping her successors and managing corporate archives.

Jean was active in the Special Libraries Association, serving as local chapter president from 1972-73 and attending many national conferences. Respected by peers and well-liked in the special library community, Jean was curious, thoughtful, fun, and adventurous. An avid hiker, backpacker, skier, and traveler, she demonstrated that dedication to work can coexist with a joyful life.

Through her life, Jean was a valued friend, mentor, and role model to many librarians, as well as a cherished colleague to her Shannon & Wilson coworkers. Jean passed peacefully earlier this month. At the request of her family, Shannon & Wilson has made a donation in her honor to the King County Search and Rescue Association—we encourage you to do the same: https://kingcountysar.org
