Shannon & Wilson Applauds the Opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

This week the curtains open for the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, a premier museum dedicated to the history and science of the film industry.

The museum, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, provides interactive, immersive, and engaging exhibitions that highlight movie making, its history and the future of arts and sciences of film.

Shannon & Wilson provided geotechnical and seismic engineering for the renovation and expansion of the Saban Building, formerly the historic May Company Department Store, paired with a new spherical addition. We prepared the foundation design within the La Brea tar pits and a base-isolation foundation system for the adjacent Piano designed Sphere annex.

Shannon & Wilson’s Los Angeles staff and partners KPFF won a 2020 ACEC California Honor Award and ACEC National Recognition Award for the project and an AIA Design Building Team of the Year Award in 2021. Shannon & Wilson also published a case history paper on the geotechnical challenges of the tar sands and our innovative solutions for the 2018 ASCE IFCEE Conference.
