Environmental Services

Assessment. Remediation. Monitoring. Compliance.

For property acquisition or redevelopment, on linear corridors or at multiple sites, Shannon & Wilson develops solutions based on a thorough understanding of the regulatory, financial, technical, and operational constraints that confront our clients. Our environmental scientists interpret environmental regulations, conduct comprehensive field investigations and site assessments, and provide effective remedial design.

Integrated with our geotechnical infrastructure or development services, railroad consulting, or underground services we provide comprehensive solutions to myriad client needs.

Geotechnical Services

Buildings. Infrastructure. Transportation.

Founded by pioneers in the geotechnical industry, our geotechnical and applied geosciences expertise continues to support projects worldwide including the Big Dig in Boston, Seattle Monorail Project, Portland (Oregon) Tri-Met, Denver T-Rex, Shanghai World Financial Centre, Sierra Leone Embassy, Fort Smith Dam, and the Fairbanks Courthouse. Augmenting our geotechnical services with our environmental explorations, permitting services, underground expertise, instrumentation, and natural hazards services we provide turnkey geosciences expertise to infrastructure and building development projects.

Natural Hazards

Earthquakes. Landslides. Rockfall. Mass Wasting.

Natural hazards geologists and engineers support all areas of services from seismic support in the design or rehabilitation of structures, to landslide and rockfall stabilization in the protection of roadways, railroads and residential properties, to the geologic interpretation pf subsurface conditions in defining above and below ground corridors and alignments for rail, pipeline or highway.

Natural Resources

Planning, Permitting, Restoration.

Studies of wetlands, threatened and endangered species, and critical areas are integral steps in permit acquisition for site development and project completion. Shannon & Wilson understands the natural and regulatory processes involved, can explain them clearly, and assist in establishing cost-effective approaches to reduce the impact to a project. Our Natural Resources staff specializes in wetland studies, habitat evaluation, environmental documentation, and permitting. We provide water quality analysis, stormwater/watershed management, biological assessments, and SEPA/NEPA studies.

Railroad Services

Tracks. Yards. Embankments. Tunnels.

Railroad engineering problems are not purely geotechnical or tunnel engineering problems, and cannot be divorced from railroad operational procedures, constraints, and safety guidelines. Shannon & Wilson has provided geotechnical and environmental support services to the railroad industry for more than 40 years and as a result, is fully aware of the railroad’s need to safely and efficiently move traffic. Our ongoing, on-call agreements with the major railroads in the country require us to respond to a broad range of emergencies to keep track safely in operation. We have developed construction techniques and related technical specifications suitable for live-track construction on high-density main lines with short work windows.

Underground Services

Microtunnels. Large Diameter. Directional Drilling. Rehabilitation.

Our geotechnical and geologic expertise has been applied on the successful completion of more than 900 underground openings from Alaska to Bolivia and Hawaii to Massachusetts. Because we have worked on tunnels with widely varying geologic challenges while employing a variety of construction methods, we can design and implement highly efficient field programs to support design efforts. In addition, we have implemented rehabilitation design including liner replacements, new portals, slope stabilization, and new drainage systems, on over 200 transportation tunnels.
